Historic Quad
The historic area of campus includes Eumenean (Eu) Hall, Philanthropic (Phi) Hall, Elm Row and Oak Row.
Construction on Elm and Oak began in 1836. The buildings served as dormitories when the college opened in 1837, with each including four rooms for 16 students. Over the years, the buildings have been used as infirmary and classroom spaces, and have housed the music and art departments and fraternities. Most recently, Oak was converted to a permanent exhibition space in which to share the college’s institutional history.
Eu and Phi Halls were constructed in 1849 and 1850 respectively, and are named for the first two student societies founded at the college, both of which still meet today. During presidential election years, college democrats and republicans debate the issues of the election from the Eu and Phi balconies.
All four buildings were placed on the National Historic Register in 1977.
